The Job
You will have specific responsibility for the following:
Running the workshop
Plan and prioritise the daily and weekly workload from OnCue's defect reports, inspection schedule and breakdown calls, with vehicle availability for patient journeys as the first consideration.
Set up and maintain the workshop, service van, tools, diagnostic equipment and stock of consumables, and tell the Director what is needed before it becomes a problem.
Decide, within the agreed limits, what is done in-house and what is sent to a specialist or dealer, and get the customer's agreement where the service agreement requires it.
Order parts and consumables through the agreed suppliers, check them against the job and keep to the budgets set by the Director.
Keep the workshop safe: follow and help write the risk assessments and safe systems of work for workshop, roadside and tyre work, and keep the premises tidy and secure.
Maintenance and repair
Diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic faults using diagnostic equipment and rectify them to manufacturer and industry standards.
Carry out scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance in line with the fleet maintenance plan and manufacturer schedules.
Carry out safety inspections at the intervals set out in the service agreement and record defects, actions and outcomes.
Prepare vehicles for MOT, including pre-MOT checks and rectification, and present them for test where required.
Investigate and clear engine management and warning lights and advise OnCue where further work is needed.
Tyres
Fit, balance, repair and replace tyres on the fleet, in the workshop and at OnCue sites, in line with the agreed tyre policy and British Standards for repair.
Monitor tyre condition and pressures across the fleet and flag vehicles approaching legal limits.
Roadside and mobile work
Attend breakdowns and roadside incidents, make vehicles safe, carry out roadside repairs where practical and organise recovery of vehicles to the workshop where they cannot be repaired at the roadside.
Attend OnCue sites and complete repairs efficiently and with minimum disruption to operations.
Take part in the on-call rota for out-of-hours breakdowns, attending or organising recovery as needed.
Records and compliance
Ensure every vehicle worked on meets legal, compliance and safety requirements before it returns to service, and refuse to release a vehicle that does not.
Complete accurate job cards, inspection sheets, defect reports and parts records on the day the work is done. These records are the basis of JACKS's invoices to OnCue and of OnCue's compliance file, so they must be complete, legible and on time.
Provide the Director with the weekly summary of work done, hours, parts and outstanding jobs needed for invoicing and for reporting to the customer.
The customer
Be the day-to-day point of contact for OnCue's Fleet Director and Fleet Coordinators, agree priorities with them and keep them informed of when vehicles will be back in service.
Give clear, honest advice on the condition of vehicles, the cost and priority of repairs, and anything that should be taken off the road.
Represent JACKS professionally with OnCue crews, patients, site staff and suppliers, and deliver the service standards in the agreement with OnCue.
Carry out any other reasonable duties in keeping with the post as the workshop develops.
Skills required
NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds Level 3 or equivalent in Light Vehicle or LCV Maintenance and Repair.
Experience post-qualification on light commercial vehicles and van-based conversions such as ambulances (Transit, Master, Sprinter, Crafter or similar), including time as the senior or sole technician in a workshop or running a mobile round without day-to-day supervision.
Fault diagnosis with modern diagnostic equipment. Servicing, brakes, suspension, steering, clutches, exhausts, electrical faults. Tyre fitting, balancing and repair. Safe working practices and inspection standards. Planning own workload. Clear written job records suitable for invoicing.
Full UK manual driving licence (Category B) with no more than 3 penalty points.
A self-starter who can be handed a workshop and a fleet, take ownership and keep things moving. Organised, asks for help early when something is beyond the workshop and is honest about what a job needs. Calm at the roadside. Polite and presentable with crews, patients and OnCue staff. Reliable timekeeper. Willing to be on call.
All offers are subject to satisfactory references, a right-to-work check and an annual DVLA licence check. The post holder must report any change to their driving licence status immediately. A Standard DBS check will be carried out and the post holder must complete OnCue's site induction and safeguarding awareness training as a contractor. Technical qualifications are to be kept up to date, with training supported by the company.
